The new courthouse contributes to the development of downtown Austin
The new 7-story building will serve 17 counties and house 8 courtrooms for the District and Magistrate courts, judges’ chambers and associated facilities for the District Clerk, U.S. Probation, U.S. Pretrial, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Attorney, Federal Public Defender and Government Service Agency (GSA). This project total value is $107M.
Thanks to its architecture, the courthouse will blend in perfectly with its immediate surroundings. The public lobby has been designed to support community activities and promote a civic relationship with the adjacent park. The building’s green design will enable it to achieve a LEED Silver certification, due to the collaboration of all participants, including Beaubois with its portfolio containing several LEED projects.
The Beaubois team will appear in each courtroom, furnishing and embellishing them with architectural woodwork elements and 2-storey high wall panels, some of which will resemble the walls of medieval towers. These same types of walls will also be found in the vestibules. In addition, Beaubois will produce and install bookcases, paneling and door frames for the judges’ chambers and will fabricate the security desks.
An interesting aspect of this project is that there will be a greater-than-average use of veneer. Pecan will be the predominant wood and will be inset in a random fashion to give each piece a unique look and feeling, a cachet that Beaubois gives to everything it does.
